UNH/COMPTEL ACTIVITIES

OPERATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The Instrument Ground Support Equipment for COMPTEL is located at the University of New Hampshire. All commands sent to the instrument (through the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland) originate at UNH. UNH also receives daily ``quick-look'' data from COMPTEL during real-time passes of the CGRO spacecraft. These data are inspected upon receipt to verify the satisfactory health, safety, and performance of the instrument. In the event of certain time-critical observations (such as for gamma-ray bursts) an accelerated processing of COMPTEL data can be carried out at UNH, with the rapid dissemination of results to the world-wide astronomical community.

SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH
The research scientists associated with the COMPTEL group at UNH carry out a wide range of scientific programs using data received from COMPTEL. Topics of current interest include: solar flares, gamma-ray bursts, active galaxies, supernovae, pulsars, compact objects, and the study of diffuse gamma-ray emission of both Galactic and extragalactic origin.

GUEST INVESTIGATOR ACTIVITIES
UNH operates as the primary Guest Investigator site for U.S.-based scientists interested in pursuing scientific research with COMPTEL data. The Compton Observatory Guest Investigator Program is open to all scientists interested in pursuing high-energy astrophysical research with the CGRO, under an annual NASA Research Announcement . For further information contact the Compton Observatory Science Support Center at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.
