Abstract
We report on the current status of a study of a selected
number of unidentified EGRET gamma-ray sources near
the Galactic plane which do not have potential blazar identifications.
Several of these sources have shown dramatic variability.
To date, no identification has resulted from
radio, optical, or X-ray observations.
We suspect that these sources are
a new class of Galactic GeV gamma-ray emitters in addition to isolated
pulsars.
We will present results of X-ray observations of the
field of the most prominent of these gamma-ray sources,
GRO J1838-04.
