Diffuse Galactic continuum gamma rays

A.W. Strong

Abstract

I will describe current work on the diffuse Galactic g-ray continuum emission. Despite much progress in this field there are still many open questions regarding the interpretation of this radiation. Topics to be discussed include the > 1 GeV excess observed by EGRET, the nature of the emission in the MeV range observed by COMPTEL, the role of inverse-Compton emission, and the halo contribution to high-latitude g-rays. Emphasis will be placed on the link with cosmic-ray physics, and the iplications for cosmic-ray nuclear and electron components will be examined.
