COMPTEL Solar Observation Periods COMPTEL Solar Observation Periods

The field-of-view of the COMPTEL telescope is about 1 sr. There is no definite border, but the sensitivity of the instrument decreases rapidly above ~50 degrees. Throughout its mission, the CGRO satellite is re-oriented about every 1 or 2 weeks. Due to the apparent solar motion and depending on the positioning of the satellite, the angle between the COMPTEL pointing axis and the position of the Sun is changing. In the following plots, this angle was calculated for all 5 observation phases. To get more information on the viewing plan of the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory, see the CGRO Timeline Information at the Science Support Center.
