AAS 194: Special Session in Astrostatistics
The First Annual Special Session in AstroStatistics
at the Centennial Meeting of the American Astronomical Society
(194th AAS, Chicago, IL, May-June 1999)
RECENT REVOLUTIONS IN BAYESIAN AND RELATED LIKELIHOOD TECHNIQUES:
PROGRESS AT THE BOUNDARIES OF ASTRONOMY AND STATISTICS
LEAD SPEAKER:
- James Berger, ISDS, Duke University
- Quotes from his Historical Overview talk:
- ``Bayesian analysis, together with the new MCMC computational
techniques allow, for the first time, a complete integration of
scientific and statistical modeling.'' One might usefully add:
``Heretofor these have been considered in isolation, to the detriment
of both.''...
- ``Today, the logical simplicity, computational advantages, and
possibility of unified scientific/statistical modeling make Bayesian
analysis especially attractive for analysis of problems in
astrophysics.''
